Sale Success!

Thrown into our usual routines this week was our 4th annual Spring Fundraiser.  We opted for a high traffic location in the new Cedar Hall this year and that brought us great success!  Not only did we see some familiar faces (thank you to all of our supporters who made it out), we also provided lunch and snacks for many busy Kirkwood students!  It was a great opportunity to work on social skills, money skills, and customer service!

Our feature blogger this week is Chelsea.  Here is what she has to say about her week at PrairieWood...

"This week at PrairieWood I learned to go around from rack to rack to see what they need.  I enjoyed sizing the t-shirts.  I was challenged by counting money at the sale.  At PrairieWood I would like to learn more about taking a walk to our new place at Linn Hall.  I had fun doing the Hot Dog sale."

Hot Dog Sale Preparation underway!

Sarah picking out her carrots in the "produce area" at Hy-Vee.
We had a very busy week at PrairieWood (aren't they all?!?)!!!  We are holding our annual Spring Fundraiser on Wednesday April 18th, so this past week was all about gearing up and preparations for that.  We spent time purchasing supplies in the community and making posters.  While we were doing all of this, we also found time to do our usual grocery shopping, City bus trips, and cooking projects.  We hope to see you all on Wednesday at our Hot Dog sale.  We will be in the Cedar Hall Atrium from 11am-1pm selling hot dogs and popcorn and showing off our social skills!

Our feature blogger this week is Sarah...here is what she had to say about her week at PrairieWood.

"This week at PrairieWood I learned to find carrots in the produce area.  I enjoyed picking up hot dogs at the high school.  I was challenged by remembering to dry my hands after washing them.  At PrairieWood I would like to learn more about pushing the tape to stop at the Czech Village on the City Bus.  This week I saw pretty purple vases when window shopping in the Czech Village."

We also spent our Friday Community time at The Dreaming Bear.  This time we created beautiful masterpieces on canvas.  We loved our time in the cozy and inspiring studio on this rainy Friday!

Short but sweet!

We're coming to you a little early this week.  After having Monday off, PrairieWood students also have a holiday tomorrow!  Only a THREE day week!  While we weren't in school much this week, we managed to squeeze in time for each student to practice riding the bus, cooking, and work out at the Rec. Center.  Here is what Kendra had to say about her week at the Transition Center.

"This week at PrairieWood I learned about Poetry Month in our News2You.  I enjoyed cooking Upside down rolls using the oven.  I was challenged by carrying big boxes and opening the door.  At PrairieWood I would like to learn more about cleaning the bathroom for chores."

Flowers aren't the only one blooming...

We are very much enjoying the early spring at PrairieWood.  The nice weather makes our bus trips more enjoyable and allows us to get out and enjoy our community so much more.  The flowers and tree aren't the only ones blooming and growing these days...the independence of our students is as well!  Spring is such a fine time of year in our program because we really start to see each individual grow and display the independence they have been working on all year.  It is when our staff can sit back and watch our adults work on their own.  Our feature blogger this week is Ahsia.  Here is what she had to say about her week at PrairieWood.

"This week at PrairieWood I learned to look through the Hy-Vee flyer to choose items for lunch.  I enjoyed my birthday treats which were chocolate brownies.  I was challenged by journaling.  At PrairieWood I would like to learn more about cooking.  Also, I did an amazing job pushing the tape for city bus."

It's All About the Chili!

We may be experiencing some unseasonably warm weather in Iowa, but it has been awfully "Chili" at PrairieWood this week!  The folks at the Linn Mar Success Center asked us to join in their 2nd Annual Chili feed.  We spent our cooking time this week preparing three very special chili's: Superhero Chili, Cha Cha Chili, and Cowgirl Chili.  We even made posters and decorated our tables in the theme of our chili.  Today we faced the judges.  We made good eye contact, spoke clearly, and shared about our chili.  Then we got to taste and enjoy everyone's creations for lunch.  It was a fun learning experience for everyone involved!  Our featured blogger this week is Kaitlyn.  Here is what she has to say about her week at PrairieWood...

"This week at PrairieWood I learned to find milk at Hy-Vee all by myself!  I enjoyed work.  I was challenged by getting the right numbered sizers at work.  At PrairieWood I would like to learn more about sweeping up popcorn.  I also learned I need to learn when to push the tape for my bus stop."

Enjoy the pictures from today's competition...
